Matthew Powell will be joining Royalenova’s Summer Session II Week Long Intensive on Sunday, August 16th. Classes are open to both Royalenova students and the public. Class for dancers 12 and under is from 12-1:30 pm, and class for dancers 13 and over is from 1:30-3 pm. Classes cost $30 each, or register for the entire week and experience the full lineup of artists that we have in store for only $350! Matthew Powell received his training on scholarship with the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet. As a professional, he performed with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, the San Francisco Opera, West Side Story International Tour, regional productions of All Shook Up, and Fiddler on the Roof, and has danced principal and soloist roles in over fifty works by renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Paul Taylor, Merce Cunningham, Twyla Tharp, Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Michael Smuin and more.
As a teacher, Matthew is currently a faculty member with Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Ballet Tech, and is permanent guest faculty with the Rock School for Dance Education. Guest teachings include the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Trey McIntyre Project, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Morphoses, Marymount Manhattan, Ballet Academy East, Kansas City Ballet School, Brooklyn Ballet, Universities of Iowa and Alabama, Rosie’s Broadway Kids, and the Broadway production of Billy Elliot. Matthew choreographs works across the country, and he was the recipient of a fellowship from the New York Choreographic Institute.
As a director, Matthew is currently ballet master with Brooklyn Ballet, and works as assistant director to famed opera director, Dorothy Danner. He is also currently the on-set choreographer for BLOCH Dancewear’s ad campaigns. Upcoming projects include assistant directing The Daughter of the Regiment for the Fort Worth Opera Festival and teaching for Ballet Hispanico’s summer intensive.
